Supporting surrounding
eco-systems
Basildon Borough Council asked 4site to design, supply and install a series of signs for its local countryside spaces and parks. The brief was to provide clear directional signs while ensuring minimal environmental damage and supporting surrounding eco-systems. Our offices were ‘open door’ throughout the project, allowing council representatives, to come and see work in progress and sign off proofs.
Everything we produce is bespoke to a client's needs, and this whole family of signage reflects Basildon's Climate Change 2030 Brand, as well as being locally sourced and made of 100% sustainable materials.
The main entrance signs all incorporate a wildflower planter in their tops which will, over time soften and blend the top line of the signage as well as attracting pollinators. The secondary entrance signs include extensive habitat panels on the reverse, providing shelter and sustenance for wildlife and insects and helping to promote and reinforce the Council's sustainability and biodiversity message.

Accessibility
Accessibility has been at the heart of the design process, as these signs are promoting the fact
that the Borough’s parks are for everyone, so in addition we provided bespoke timber
wayfinding totems and wheelchair accessible information lecterns. Accordingly, a great deal
of time and attention has been spent on considering the needs of all users of the parks.
Careful attention has been paid to text sizes and contrast levels, while maintaining the vibrant
colourway of the brand. Viewing heights and angles, as well as the orientation of the signage, how
they sit within the landscape and the design of the iconography have all been carefully considered.
Our attention to legibility goes beyond the simple question of the size and clarity of the text:
it extends to include the legibility of the space itself. This is crucial in wayfinding.
As with other projects, the purpose of the signage family is that a first-time visitor without
a smartphone in their hand can still confidently make sense of the space upon arrival.
This incredible company have produced an amazing array of signage and way finders for our parks across the borough. Beyond the quality of the product and the delivery of the work, what I love most about 4Site is their relationship building and collaboration with our parks and comms teams. The results are wonderful and as a councillor who has parks and open spaces as part of my portfolio, it’s been fantastic to get such universal praise from residents for the additions to the areas they love.
